  • Home Care Checklist: 7 Medical Equipment Items to Rent for an Elderly Patient

When a parent or grandparent comes home from the hospital, the right equipment can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and weeks of unnecessary discomfort. Renting hospital-grade equipment is faster, cheaper, and more flexible than buying — especially when you don’t know how long you’ll need it.

    1. Hospital Bed (Manual or Electric)

The single most important piece of equipment for bedridden patients. Side rails prevent falls, height adjustment makes it easier for caregivers, and a good backrest makes eating, reading, and physiotherapy possible without lifting the patient.

    2. Air Mattress or Pressure-Relief Mattress

For patients who can’t move on their own, bedsores can develop within days. An air mattress prevents them by continuously redistributing pressure. This is non-negotiable for long-term bed rest.

    3. Wheelchair (Standard or Commode Type)

For mobility within the home and trips outside. A commode wheelchair doubles as a bedside toilet — a huge help when bathroom trips are difficult or risky.

    4. Walker

Once the patient starts moving again, a walker provides safe, confidence-building support. Look for one with wheels and a seat for longer indoor distances.

    5. Oxygen Concentrator

Recommended for patients with respiratory conditions, post-COVID lung issues, or as a precaution after major surgery. A 5L concentrator covers most home-care needs.

    6. Pulse Oximeter and BP Monitor

Inexpensive but essential. Daily readings help you and the doctor catch problems early.

    7. Suction Machine (for some patients)

For patients who can’t clear their own secretions — common after stroke or in advanced age. Your doctor will tell you if this is needed.

    Why Rent Instead of Buy?

    • Most equipment is needed for weeks or a few months — not years
    • Renting costs a fraction of purchase price
    • We service and sanitize between rentals
    • If recovery extends, you can keep the equipment and apply rental payments toward purchase
